Sunscreen

Why use organic sunscreen?

Why use an organics sunscreen as opposed to a normal sunscreen or sunblock? The latest research shows that many of the common ingredients in the average sunscreen are highly toxic and may cause more harm than good to our bodies when exposed to sunlight.

What are the toxic ingredients in common sunscreens?

Octyl-methoxycinnamate. Produces free radicals (single molecular oxygen) known to be toxic to cells.

Titanium dioxide. Causes DNA damage (the cells genetic material) due to superoxide radicals, active oxygen radicals and hydroxyl radicals when exposed to sunlight.

Oxybenzone. Is rapidly oxidised in the presence of light and inactivates important antioxidant systems in the skin (the skins natural protection system).

PABA. Produces free radicals in the presence of light.

Cinoxate. Causes DNA damage (sister chromatid exchanges)

So what does this all mean?

It basically means that the ingredients in common sunsreens are causing more harm to your skin than good. We apply sunscreen to our bodies to protect ourselves from the sun and the damage the UV rays can cause, but what we unknowingly get is a toxic cocktail that can more or less speed up our bodies ageing and cause severe damage to our DNA structure and skin.

How soothe sunburned skin?

Soothe sunburned skin with this homemade organic after sun lotion. Calm and soothe sunburn and dandruff. Hair, skin and body. My own homemade recipe for soothing a sunburned skin and calming dandruff is with organic avocado oil, tea tree oil and lavender oil. I only use organic and pure oils and products as the non organic cheap items are mainly  synthetic and will not contain the healing, soothing and moisturizing properties the skin needs.

Mix

4 tbs avocado oil
4 drops lavender oil
4 drops tea tree oil

Preferrably only mix enough for one treatment but if you want to prepare more make sure you keep it in an amber glass bottle and store out of sunlight to protect the essential oils.

- For sunburn: Apply to the sunburned skin areas avoiding eyes and intimate areas.

- For dry dandruff and a flaky scalp: Use every 5-7 hair wash. First wash your hair with a mild and hydrating organic shampoo, then apply the mixture to the scalp gently massaging. Leave in for 3-5 minutes before you rinse thoroughly. If your hair is long use a conditioner but make sure to not apply it near the scalp.

The avocado oil is a great moisturizer, the lavender soothes and calms the skin down while the tea tree is a disinfectant as well as a soothing agent.

www.phyorganics.com has a great variety of certified organic miessence care products which is what I mainly use. You will find hair care and essential oils suitable for this recipe. The avocado oil or a similar moisturizing oil can be found in your local health shop.
